Price: $36 US

Rating: 10/10

Description from DishKbron: JTAG (Joint Test Action Group) is the commonly-used name for IEEE std 1149.1, which defines a method for testing board-level interconnect - also called Boundary Scan.
The JTAG standard was developed to provide a simple way of testing circuit boards for bad connections - shorted pins, open pins, bad traces, etc. More recently, programmable-logic vendors have made use of JTAG as a convenient way of configuring devices.
JTAG compliant devices have dedicated hardware that comprises a state machine and several registers. This dedicated hardware interprets instructions and data provided by four dedicated signals. These signals are defined by the JTAG standard to be: TDI (Test Data In), TDO (Test Data Out), TMS (Test Mode Select), and TCK (Test ClocK). The dedicated JTAG hardware interprets instructions and data on the TDI and TMS signals, and drives data out on the TDO signal. The TCK signal is used to clock the process.

My Experience: First of all, I must say that I had an excellent experience with DishKbron. I was given a tracking number right away which is always a very nice thing, since you know the status of your order. The shipping time was unbelievable, I received the buffered JTAG in 2 days. It was packaged with care (shipped in a bubbled envelope, and encloses in an anti static bag). The unit is very awesome, at a very affordable price. I tested this JTAG with my 2700 and was able to read/write to it in 30 seconds with JKeys 2.99. I am used to using my simple JTAG where JTAGing my IRD is a half hour process (heating up soldering iron and soldering it on). This is not the case with the buffered JTAG from DishKbron. The unit is a hands free design. The pogo pins are held exactly where they should be with the little case that they are enclosed in. The aligator clip for ground is also a very nice feature. Of course, buffered JTAG is much more reliable and safer than the simple JTAG which is what makes this unit very awesome. It also comes with a male DB 25 so it connected directly to the back of my laptop's parallel port. The only downside to the buffered JTAG is that it requires an external power source, and this unit does not come with one, but I was lucky and was able to use the power supply from my ISO programmer. Power supplies are not expensive and you would probably be able to find one kicking around your house. A nice feature for the future would be to possibly have the ability to power by batteries.

Pros:
-Buffered JTAG - much more reliable then simple JTAG
-Hands free, no more holding JTAG while waiting to read and write
-Solderless, connects to your IRD in a matter of seconds
-Works with all IRDs models that have a JTAG port (including 6000)
-Very reasonable price
-Small and compact
-Fast shipping with tracking number
-Male DB 25, so no need for connectors to make compatiable with printer port

Cons:
-Needs external power supply
-Didn't come with power supply (although this could be purchased from your local Radio Shack)

Final Thoughts: This is truly an amazing device at an affordable price. It was shipped fast and packaged with care. The buffered JTAG is much more reliable and the hands free design is awesome! This is a must have for any tester. Overall rating: 10/10
